Esteemed Surgeon allegedly choked nurse for not following doctor’s order

Nassau University Medical Center released an official statement:
“Following the alleged incident that occurred on January 22, 2018, the hospital cooperated with the Nassau County Police Department. At no time was patient safety effected. The doctor has been suspended until further notice.”

Nassau Police allege an esteemed weight loss surgeon violently attacked nurse for not following his patient care order.

Venkatesh Sasthakonar, 44, a highly skilled Long Island surgeon attacked a nurse, 51, from behind by wrapping an elastic cord around her neck on Monday, according to police.

According to the criminal complaint, the 51-year old female victim alleges the choking incident happened around 4:45 PM. Complaint claims doctor said “I should kill you for this,” as he wrapped an elastic cord from his sweatshirt around her neck.  The victim, name withheld, said strangulation left her “gasping for air” and she was treated for “substantial neck pain.”

The criminal complaint alleges Sasthakonar attacked the nurse because gave a patient medication at the wrong time.  The police report say the surgeon left the East Meadow hospital after the alleged strangulation and returned to the premises several hours later. The doctor was then taken into police custody at the hospital.

Dr. Sasthakonar was arraigned Tuesday on charges of strangulation and assault.  Dr. Sasthakonar plead not guilty and was released on $3,500 cash bail. An order of protection was issued against him, according to online court records.

Dr. Sasthakonar, MD is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The surgeon has published extensively in scholarly journals and was prominently involved in the development of a “surgical cure” for Type II diabetes. Dr. Sasthakonar is the primary author of a  submitted paper for publication on a surgical cure for Type II diabetes.

Venkatesh Sasthakonar, MD, joined Nassau University Medical Center as a highly specialized weight loss surgeon in 2008. The well-regarded surgeon was the Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery fellow at Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the New York Medical College previous.

Sasthakonar’s attorney, Melvyn Roth of Garden City, said the strangulation charge was “overblown” and the surgeon did not intend to hurt the nurse over the injection of medicine, according to Newsday report.
